Disaster.......NOT
Read other reviews and was hesitant to do the install. But desided instead of using the 7/32 drill, I used a #18 drill bit(.169) as a piolet drill, this will allow the drill to follow the angle of the screw boss. Then followed through with a #9 drill bit(.196)equal to major diameter of the 5-30mm screw. Which by the way is the correct length. Length of install would have been less than 1 hour but....because I dropped a screw down behind the rear glove box and required the help from my wife (to which she helps with most of my installs) it turned out to be a 2 hour duration. As an after thought cover all cavities with a cloth to prevent hardware retrievement. As for the intensity of the light it equils all the other lights on the bike. Therefor would recomend the product for a good looking goldwing upgrade. |

Pain to install but looks great afterwards
Just installed mine today. Like several others, I fought with it for a couple hours until I finally gave up and went and bought 4 10-32 1 1/4" screws which are just a little longer than the ones that came with it (when I checked the screw that came with it, the 10-32 looked like a better fit than a metric size). I also picked up 4 1 1/2" ones since I wasn't sure if they would work better. The 1 1/2" ones were too long, but they did help me align it up a little easier to get all the screws in the handle. Once I had the longer screws in, and pulled down to lid, I then replaced each screw with the 1 1/4" screw. Had to really pull on the handle on one side since it just seemed to be off a fraction and the screw on one side wouldn't align with it once I had the screws on the other side in. Elongating the holes on the outside of the trunk helped a little to allow the screws to give a little in their alignment. Once I got it on, looks great and very functional in picking up the trunk lid with a fairing and rack mounted on it. Just hope I won't be having to get into the upper part of the trunk lid again for a very long time. Giving it 4 starts just due to the issues of the installation and screw lengths. |

Needs longer screws
As others have said this needs the 35mm screws to fit it properly. as the 30mm screws are just to short. Once on it looks good |

I put this on my 2012 as well. It's easy to install, and requires you to drill five holes. If you aren't comfortable doing that, have a dealer or friend help. Start out by removing the 18 or so screws that hold the inner trunk lid in place, remove the harness from the opener unit. With a drill bit (recommended size found in the instructions), drill through the trunk latch screw holes. Drill a fifth hole between the two holes on the right side for the wiring. Do this from the inside between the two bosses. Don't blindly drill from the outside. Insert wire through the gasket and the middle hole you drilled and plug the wire into harness (the white one, not the blue or red) Reassemble the inner trunk lid. Remember to reattach the plug on the opener unit. Leave out the four screws that originally held in the latches in place. Place the other rubber gasket on the left and start with the inner screws first. The two outer screws seem to come in a bit short until the handle is tightened a bit...but it all works out in the end. Looks nice with the OEM spoiler and if you have a brake modulator, it'll function on that too. |

Installed on 2012 ABS GL1800. I'm adding this info for those that have a 2012 and were wondering what will fit. I will review 27 items that I installed on my 2012. Kudos to others that warned me about the installation nightmare. Same problem here. The handle was shipped with M5x.80x30mm bolts and should have been M5x.80x35mm bolts. I could not find them locally and had to special order them. Hopefully the new bolts will clear up the issues. Also, there was chrome in the threads which make it even harder to start a bolt that will only grab one thread (two at the most). Something a little different on a 2012... The brake lights are a lot brighter on the bike so the LED light in the handle is barely noticeable. Was a great addition on my previous gl1800s (not so much on 2012). |

This was an absolute nightmare to install. Started out by drilling the holes with a small bit, drilling from inside out, and proceeded up to the 7/32 which I then drilled into the holes from the outside in. The bolts would not line up with the holes in the handle. I worked with this for over two days and on the last day... over two hours. Finally got it on but again, a nightmare. Called Wingstuff at one point and they advised me to drill out another size up - which I eventually did. I told them I was concerned about wall thickness and they suggested I call the Kury # they gave me... it went unanswered and to a machine - I have yet to hear from them. I did have problems with the 1/4 drill taking out part of the hole side wall on tow of the four holes - but the latch clips and the trunk interior seem to sturdy the situation - but still, I thought at the time, I was going have to scrap the trunk lid and pay $700 for a new one. I consider myself to be pretty handy and I have installed several things where I had to drill the plastic - but this was a seriously butt puckering, sleep losing ordeal. Glad it's on. Yes, I had to buy longer bolts as well. |

Mine came with four long screws that wont fit the hole. Maybe they had a mistake. Looks good but gave me the hassle to look for the screws so the minus 1 star. But funtions very well. Will still recommend highly. I hope the people packaging this will pay more attention to the screws before they ship to the customer. |

Look great, works for now. There is a good chance the connector might lose contact and if it does I'll just hard wire it on a rainy day. A great added break light. I just added the rubber bumpers on the trunk so that is added pounding to get the trunk shut. |

I have to rate this product twice...Overall - it's a 5 on the looks and functionality of the product. Adds great looks by giving trunk a more finished look, stability in opening, and of course one more light to flash when braking. Overall, it was worth the cost, and the gigantic HEADACHE of putting it on the bike. Now to the other grade - INSTALLATION - is definitely a 1 - an absolute BEAST to install for me. Mainly because the quick connectors from Kuryakyn didn't maintain contact so when the lid slammed shut, the wires would vibrate apart and no lights...I took it all apart three times, and finally I just cut all the quick connect stuff apart and hard-wired it. Works now, but sure had me talking to myself and using a bunch of made up words while putting it together. Both shorter and longer screws came with mine, and i ended up using the short ones - the long ones were too long and the handle ended up sticking out from the trunk by an eighth of an inch or more, so I went with the shorter ones and they worked great. |

The look is well worth it. I had to go to the hardware store and buy some longer mounting hardware. Hindsight being 20/20 I think I would have put some silicone between the handle and the trunk to give myself more insurance from water leaks. Not sure I trust the supplied seal. |
