Does what a CB does
This is one of those things that you really don't want to spend the money on because you might not use it very much, but that one time you need or want to use it you are VERY happy that you have it. I'm glad I got it, but sheesh, it's just too expensive. The most expensive Cobra system I could find at a Pilot station was only $400. Despite the cost, installation was a breeze, only 2 holes to drill (get a good set of step drill bits or a couple of hole saws, don't use paddle bits IMHO) and wiring was a snap. Range is limited, as to be expected, to about a mile or so, less in the mountains. Lost a star due to unnecessarily expensive for ancient technology. |

CB
Easy install, even though the instructions say to remove seat, there is no need to. Remove 4 screws on the audio unit and the CB fits nicely underneath and plugs into the audio unit. Drilled one hole for the antenna cable ran cable inside trunk. Unit works great, took about an hour from start to finish. |

I installed a new CB into my 2005 GL1800 and all was great. Worked as advervized. Unfortunately, got some water spilled in the rear trunk that found the CB. Now all I can get is CB ERROR. I have dryed it out with absorbant material and a hair dryer to no results. Any help? |

I dont know how I managed to survive this long without a cb. It ended up being a early xmas present from my son; he said he didnt want me out there without being able to talk to others so one morning about 1:AM he called from work and told me to order it now. Wingstuff got it to me in less than a week which was pretty quick and by that time I had read the installion and vedios and other reviews and was getting cold feet. I read Gregg's review and it was a wonderful help. Went to radio shack and gave them the #s he had on his review. It took me @ 8 hrs over 2 days. Not removing the trunk and shelter all the way saved me alot of time cause I added other stuff at this time also. Even Wingman26.com help alot also and could not of made it without those color photos. Found a vacant lot from a friend dn town and set SWR; got 1.1 on ch #1; 1.5 on ch #20; and 2.2 on ch #40 and it sounds great and going on 400-500 mile trip this cold wk end over 2 days. I chose the hodaline cb cause anything else would be like putting a ford engine in a chevy. Thanks fellow winggers for the aboundance of enfo. |

If you have the 2012 GW, you must to buy this! Installing the FACTORY HONDA CB (not the aftermarket one) is much easier on the 2012 models! The seat does not have to be removed! The new bikes have the Audio Control Unit (ACU) mounted in the trunk well, above the location for the CB. The ACU does not have to be disconnected, just 4 mounting screws and the whole ACU lifts enough to locate the CB beneath it. The CB control cable plugs into the ACU and the CB power connector is in the well with the ACU. Plug 'N play! Instructions to remove the seat and the left hand armrest, Drill a hole, feed the antenna out the front of the trunk and back in to the trunk in the same hole the ACU harness enters the well. But if you route the antenna cable inside the front left corner of the trunk, the armrest, pocket, and the seat do not have to come off. Just drill the 3 holes to mount the antenna, install the ground strap for the antenna, and you are done. The CB kit does not have the RF chokes either; evidently the new models already have them installed. |

I installed one on my 04 and thought I would never do that again as it was very time consuming. It worked like it should and happy I did it. I now own a 12 and knowing how great a cb can be when group riding I decided to try it again. The install on a 12 is much easier than the older models and only took about an hour. The directions are clear and accurate if you just follow the steps, dont let them overwhelm you when you first read them. |

Fantastic idea, and as we aussies love our CB's to communicate with each other it would be nice, I brought my GL1800 Luxury and it has the control box on the left handle bar but nothing else. My question is how do I get a radio that is a UHF to fit my wing. I believe your sets over in the states is a am set?. Any assistance would be great. |

Over priced for old technology is my ONLY reason for submitting a four star rather than a five star rating. WingStuff did however offer the largest discount/markdown on this product that I was able to locate online. The installation went well and the CB has has been flawless in it's performance thus far. Not a "must have" however, certainly a nice to have item. |

I'm going to give a full break down here, as I was looking for posts myself before buying this, so here it goes: Very high priced, but if you are adding it, you are doing so for a reason. You don't need to pay the stealership to install this as long as you have the time and patience to do it yourself (Expect at least a half of a day, depending on your GL disassembly abilities). Included instructions lack significantly, but just search the web and you will find step-by-step instructions for both radio and antenna installation, many sites and posts cover this from start to finish. Setting the SWR for the antenna is a must....(PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SET YOUR SWR IF YOU WANT A GOOD WORKING RADIO - THIS IS A MUST AND MANY PEOPLE DON'T TALK ABOUT THIS PART - see bottom of post) CB radio and antenna are Plug and play through and through, but take your time, install the filters correctly, and read the multiple web posts/instructions to save you time. This is NOT a quick installation - (especially if you are not patient and have not taken the seat, fairing, & console off before) .... but there are web articles covering all of these, so don't worry, YOU CAN DO IT on your own, even for a guy like me that has only owned one for 2 weeks!! Take the time to route your wiring properly and connect to the correct wiring harnesses. When mounting the antenna (refer to web posting about this subject), it is CRITICAL that you make a good ground for the antenna as the GL does not have a lot of good grounds, and if you want to get any kind of good reception/transmit from your CB radio, you must have a good antenna ground and SWR. Make sure to set/tune your SWR (Standing Wave Ratio), as this is critical to any CB antenna tuning -check the web for "setting SWR" to tune the SWR of the antenna. The SWR tuning makes a HUGE difference on the performance of your radio; there is a reason why you have set-screws on the upper portion of the antenna ...... depending on your set-up, you may even need to trim off 3/4 of an inch or more of the antenna to get an average reading below 1.5, or better. To tune the SWR, you will need the following items, available at most radio-shack stores: 1. SWR meter (most basic models will work fine). 2. Motorola to BNC RF adapter 3. PL259 adapter 4. PL259 male to BNC female 5. 18" RG58 cord with PL259 connections. If all of this confuses you, just explain to your local radio-shack techie that you are trying to tune the SWR of your GL that has car-radio antenna connections using a regular CB SWR meter, and they should know what you need to make it happen..... if they don't, go to another store!! The reason for the above adapters is because normal SWR meters are set up to accept regular CB RG-58/PL259 coax connectors, not the car-type antenna connectors that are used with the HondaLine CB kit (Requiring BNC/Motorola type adapters). One last thing, don't try to set your SWR in front of your metallic garage door, beside cars in your driveway, near big trees or light-posts, as these conditions will adversely affect your SWR reading .... go to an empty parking lot with at least 50 feet between your Wing and the closest object to get a good reading, and make sure it is running when you set the SWR. A decent SWR meter will run you $35-$45 All the adapters will run you about $17-$20 Hope this helps anyone deciding to install one. |

Glad I finally bought this for my '02. Had put it off for years but not that I am active with GWRRA, I use it all the time, even when not in group rides. Having a cb is a necessity I think. I travel the highway during the week and use it to communicate to find out about traffic problems or "bears" - speed traps. It has helped a lot and saved a lot of time. It is still pricey, but Honda will most likely not come down on the price. Otherwise, if you are thinking about getting one, do it up here. Wingstuff has the lowest price and get the Hondaline antenna which will last longer. The negative: Instructions were lousy, like the other driver says. In metric. Who has metric drill bits in America? I did the install and it took a couple hours, but have a working cd which is what counts. |
