This Made in USA Utopia Backrest is the Original High Quality In Seat Style Backrest designed for and fits any year GL1800 Goldwing motorcycle, including the heated seat version and the 2012 GL1800. This is the new version of the backrest and is made with non-dimpled material.
Utopia is the Driver backrest that becomes a part of your seat. No bars in the way of drivers hips and legs or passengers legs. Folds forward to ease passenger getting On or Off and adds to safety by getting out of the way in sudden stops. Includes up and down height adjustment, as well as driver seating position, back and forth, to help driver sit upright to avoid slouching--a big factor in driver fatigue. Backrest pivots at top of bar as you lean against it so no uncomfortable edges dig into your back. Well padded, but only 1-1/2 thick which takes up less seating room than most other backrests. All Top Bars are finished in a Beautiful Black Powder Coat. Comes with handy pouch with strap to convert to shoulder bag. Fits all GL1800 Gold Wings.
I love this backrest, the installation was fairly easy, once I got over the idea of having to cut a slot in a perfectly good seat, after that however, install was easy. For me the backrest is very comfortable and easily adjusts for different fits. My wife loves the pouch on the back for her to store a few things that she likes to get to easily during a ride. One of the things I love the most about this backrest is that it is MADE IN THE USA!!
Ok installation was not the easiest thing I've done to my bike so far. This item is sturdy and well made, and is very adjustable. The metal is no-nonsense, be careful when you are drilling the seat pan for the mounting bolts. I did not care for the riding position this back rest gave me. I have had this on my bike for about 6 months now and I commute about 90 miles per day. Also I've done 14000 miles this year Almost all of which have had the backrest on. I ran with the back rest in several positions. The backrest always left me putting pressure into the handle bars, its hard to explain but it just wasn't for me. I do suggest you give it a whirl and see if you care for it. I'm 6'2" 260lbs, a stocky rugby type and I think its the geometry of my build that always left me feeling like I was sitting farther forward than I wanted to. I turned around and sold this on ebay for just about what I paid for it, so give it a whirl. It looks sharp and very sturdy, and has good resale value if you don't like it.
I replaced a backrest that had an outside bar mount with the Utopia. The old backrest mounting bar rubbed on Mommas legs and was uncomfortable. Like others have said, once you get over having to cut a perfectly good seat, this install is fairly easy.
There are some very good videos on YouTube that show you how to do this install. Just do a search on YouTube for UTOPIA backrest.
Very easy install, the instructions were written very well. I have a 2012 with heated seats; I was very concerned about “the cutâ€. Follow the instructions and you will be fine, it is a lot more nerve racking than it should be. The comfort is incredible and looks like it was made for the bike. My wife loves the bag that attaches to the rear of the back rest. Absolutely great buy and definitely a do it yourself project!
And we can't wait to show you how it's done!
