Additional Product Info
GL1800 Parts & Accessories at Wingstuff.com - Utopia is the Driver backrest that becomes a part of your seat. No bars in the way of drivers hips and legs or passengers legs. Folds forward to ease passenger getting On or Off and adds to safety by getting out of the way in sudden stops. Includes up and down height adjustment, as well as driver seating position, back and forth, to help driver sit upright to avoid slouching--a big factor in driver fatigue. Backrest pivots at top of bar as you lean against it so no uncomfortable edges dig into your back. Well padded, but only 1-1/2 thick which takes up less seating room than most other backrests. All Top Bars are finished in a Beautiful Black Powder Coat. Comes with handy pouch with strap to convert to shoulder bag. Fits all GL1800 Gold Wings.

This is the cleanest addition for a back rest offered. No tubes to contend with. You do have to cut a slice into your seat but many Goldwingers have done this and all love the backrest design. If you're afraid of cutting your seat buy this one anyway. It will be a cleaner, neater, and easier access to the rear seat that anyone else offers. Are you a man or mouse. Step up to the plate and see the great look after installation. Easy to follow directions.

UPDATE!
I just returned from a 1,700 mile trip to San Diego. I used to get a sore back after 3-4 hours on the bike, however, during this trip my back was never sore.
The backrest worked wonders. The only problem I had was with a sore rear end, but that is another problem that I need to work on.
I just wished I had made this purchase several years ago. I would have saved myself a lot of pain and suffering during long trips.

This is the second bike I've installed one of these on. Love it! Great design and I really like the fact that there are no bars running up the side of the bike from the rear. Even doing this for the second time it's tough to take a knife to the seat, but it's all good in the end. Attaching the bolts from the bottom can be an exercise in frustration! Helps to have a second set of hands to push on the top of the seat. Can't say enough about this backrest! Absolute necessity on those REALLY long rides! My wife likes the pouch attached to the back too. All around one of the absolute best things you can put on the bike!

Great design. Like that there are no bars down the side to rub the passenger thighs. Folds down nicely for passenger to get on.
Took way longer to install than I thought it would, mostly to the fact that I didn't get a large enough serrated knife to cut foam. If I would have started out with the 12" knife, I would have been done in no time. Used a vacuum cleaner to get the foam piece out.
Think it is really going to help the back fatigue!

My rating is only for the installation. I am getting ready to take a 2K+ trip this month to SoCal, so I will reserve my comfort rating until I get back.
Before installing I went out to the following website: http://www.goldwingfacts.com/1800Utopiabackrest.htm
The instructions and pictures there are much better than what comes with the seat. There is also a link at the bottom of the website that takes you to a video of the installation.
The installation took me about an hour, but only because I wanted to make sure I didn't screw the seat up, because they are expensive to replace. I did have to work at clearing out the foam so I could attached the bottom bracket to the top bracket. After clearing out the foam (using an awl), I used a small phillips screw driver to line up the holes.
The installation was really staight forward and was a breeze.
