Bandit, Southern California's Famous Goldwing Trike Dog

January 19, 2009 - 03:15 PM

“Bandit” C., Oceanside, California

Meet Bandit, a Jack Russell Terrier born at Indian Oaks Kennels in Jamul, CA in 1998. He was chosen by his owners, Richard and Dorie C., for his apparent spunk and curiosity, and named Bandit because of his brown markings over one ear which almost covers his eye.  Bandit soon proved to live up to his name as his favorite pastime was to steal items from anything left on the floor—a purse, box or small trash can. Bandit loves riding on the back with Richard whenever he rides his Gold Wing Trike.

Bandit is now over 10 years old and has matured into a sweet, loving dog, even though he will still try to steal things. Richard and Dorie, members of GWRRA, Chapter CA-1N,  provide full time residential care in their home in San Diego for children who have special needs. Bandit is always ready at mealtime to help clean up the floor, but will steal food out of the hand if it’s held at his level.  He enjoys his naps curled up close to the children when they let him.

Bandit’s first ride on Richard’s Goldwing trike was in August of 2008, and he took to it surprisingly well.  Bandit loves the attention he gets on his rides. For safety he wears his goggles, helmet and leather jacket, providing a good subject for pictures when Richard stops at rest stops, filling stations and stop signs. Of course, when taking one of their breaks, he’s always hopeful for a good scratch behind the ears.

Seeing Bandit in his gear and in his carrier on the Goldwing trike always brings a smile from others.  That’s the part Richard enjoys, as he loves to see people happy and he knows his buddy Bandit will always bring a smile no matter what is going on in peoples lives.

Richard frequents our retail and service repair facility located in Lake Forest, California. Stop by on a Saturday morning and grab a cup of coffee and chat with our friendly regulars. Theres usually lots of people who show up Saturday mornings, have a donut, coffee and usually choose a destination and ride.

Bandit loves to make friends and puts smiles on peoples faces. So the next time you see a Red Honda Goldwing trike in the parking lot at Wingstuff.com in Lake Forest, California on a typical busy Saturday or maybe on the road while Richard and Bandit are riding, give them a smile and and a big thumbs up. Bandit might even pose for a picture.

Where did you get the rig for holding Bandit.
How is it secured to the bike. Also, where can I get a helmet and goggles. I have a Staffordshire terrier and I think she'd like to ride. Pop's

Our 8 year old Jack Russell, Lance, has been riding on the back seat of the wing for 5 years. He loves is and is never tied on the bike as he has great balance. This is bred into the breed for riding on the rumps of horses because they could not keep up on the fox hunts with the hounds and horses.
He is my second best riding buddy and loves the back seat and wishes my SO would have to get into the basket on the trunk rack instead of him. He has not been able to convince her to ride there yet.

I have a female Rat Terrier [Ethel] with White body with Black spots. I think she would ride along in my 2008 Gold Wing, too!
I just need to know what stuff to buy?
1. What model & size Pet / Dog carrier?
[Is it a Pet Gear I-GO2-Traveler?]
2. Goggles?
3. Helmet?
4. Harness?
[Is it a Solvit Pet Vehicle Safety Harness?]
5. Anything else?
