Everything You Need To Know About J&M Bluetooth Helmet Headsets

For most people, staying with a cord and typical J&M Helmet Headset for your Gold Wing is still the best bang for your buck, it offers the superb sound and performance you expect at a lower price than wireless Bluetooth. However, for those of you who want to cut the cord and go with the latest Wireless Bluetooth, J&M has done just that.

J&M offers a full range of the latest generation Bluetooth headset options for the Honda Gold Wing motorcycle, as well as options to adapt to any other application. With the nature of Bluetooth® products and the confusion surrounding how they actually work in the motorcycle riding environment. Here, we explain how J&M Gold Wing bluetooth works, as well as intergrating with any other motorcycle application. Learn what you need to know before making a purchase, or just stay with the more affordable and superb sounding cord style motorcycle headset.

J&M Bluetooth Wireless Product Positive Features:
  1. J&M Bluetooth helmet headsets are the best performing Bluetooth headsets on the market today, providing sound and fidelity in the helmet, equal to our best performing corded headsets.
  2. J&M Bluetooth headsets use only the latest Bluetooth software profiles to allow proper linking to the latest Bluetooth enabled cell phones, MP/3 music devices, GPS units etc, along with J&M’s custom dongles.
  3. J&M’s headset designs, quality control and distribution are the best in the business and all J&M products are backed by J&M’s two-year limited warranty. (except Lithium Ion Batteries)

Possible Negative Features:

  1. J&M Bluetooth headsets must be fully charged each time before use, and if the battery goes dead during your day while riding, you will need to stop and re-charge it.
  2. Lithium Ion batteries are relatively expensive and will need to be replaced every 1 ½ - 3 years for proper operation of the headset or dongle, and these batteries are NOT covered by J&M’s 2-year limited warranty.
  3. Some Bluetooth enabled devices may not work together consistently, and/or all of the listed features may not be available/compatible with other Bluetooth devices and Bluetooth headsets.
  4. Bluetooth enabled devices can sometimes unlink from each other for reasons that cannot be readily explained, and then need to be re-linked again for proper operation, causing frustration and inconvenience for the user.
  5. When using one of J&M’s custom dongles operating in the JMAHP Bluetooth profile, connected to a motorcycle audio system with the driver/passenger intercom feature, there is an approximate 90ms delay in the talkback function into the helmet. This delay is not bothersome to most users, but some may object to it compared to the operation and sound of the intercom system when using corded headsets.
  6. In the end you should consider whether or not the higher costs of the Bluetooth headset and/or custom dongles (up to three times higher than the equivalent corded headset solution) along with the sometimes complicated linking/use scenarios, are worth it for your particular riding situation, just to take the place of the simple to use J&M headset cord.

New J&M Full-fidelity Stereo Bluetooth Wireless Helmet Headset Features:

  • Superior audio fidelity has been achieved with our DynaPort® and non-ported helmet speakers. (proper acoustical installation required)
  • These headsets provide the industry’s best combination of wind and ambient noise reduction with the AeroMike® III miniature microphones.
  • Head units feature the new CSR BluecoreV enhanced data rate (EDR) Bluetooth module, for easy pairing to most Bluetooth enabled audio devices available, including J&M’s new custom dongles.
  • Head units are powered by a rechargeable Lithium Ion/Polymer power cell.
  • Universal clamp-on mounting style.
  • Includes wired intercom feature option to passenger’s standard J&M dual mode helmet headset.

J&M Has Cut The Cord With Gold Wing Bluetooth Wireless Headsets

J&M Bluetooth® helmet headsets have been available now for a year or more and these first generation units have really broken new ground for those wanting to use cordless helmet headsets.

Bluetooth Headset and Dongle Software Profiles:

  • HSP (Headset Profile)
  • HFP (Hands Free Profile)
  • A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile ((Streaming Stereo)))
  • AVRCP (Audio Video Remote Control Profile)
  • JMAHP (J&M Motorcycle Audio Headset Profile)
JM Nolan N103 Helmet Integrated Bluetooth Stereo Headset

Almost without exception, they have been using one or more of the available standard Bluetooth headset software configurations of HSP (Headset Profile), HFP (Hands Free Profile), A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile ((Streaming Stereo)) and AVRCP (Audio Video Remote Control Profile).

These profiles allowed most of these headsets to link to various Bluetooth enabled audio devices, cell phones, GPS/Nav units, I-pods etc. Many of them could also link from one helmet to another, with various functional/wired compromises, depending upon the exact brand or Bluetooth configurations utilized.

The one thing that NONE of these Bluetooth headsets could do, including the first generation J&M® Bluetooth headsets, was to properly link to a system like you would use on a Honda® Gold Wing or Harley® Ultra Classic.

As an example, when using Bluetooth software profile A2DP (2-channel stereo profile) there are no provisions for the signal from the helmet mounted microphone to pass down to the linked device (dongle) simultaneously with the stereo signal from the dongle being transmitted back up to the helmet speakers.

That meant that you could not use the driver/passenger intercom system already built into the audio system on the bike, and you could not talk on the CB radio when you pressed the handlebar mounted TX switch.

J&M has now changed all of that with the release of our own custom Bluetooth software profile, JMAHP (J&M Motorcycle Audio Headset Profile) which allows for simultaneous transmission of both the 2-channel stereo signals and mike signal, back and forth between the headset and dongle.

This new software profile will be included, along with the other standard Bluetooth profiles, in the updated 2008 versions of all J&M Bluetooth helmet headsets, using the enhanced-data-rate (EDR) BlueCoreV® module.

Bluetooth Wireless Products will give these second generation J&M Bluetooth headsets the ability to still link with most all Bluetooth enabled stand alone devices available in the marketplace today, but in addition, be able to link with the new J&M custom dongles for systems like the Honda Gold Wing, Harley Ultra, JMCB-2003 and many other applications to be released.

All of us here want you to be happy with your purchases, so please keep in mind the above considerations BEFORE purchasing any of our Bluetooth headset products.

The Start of this post said it would explain what I would need. All I got from it was what to consider and how it worked

Thanks,

Didn't consider I would have to keep the bluetooth headset battery charged each night. I'm looking at another helmet this year, this may be my chance to try a bluetooth headset on my Wing. Lets see, chrome? or bluetooth headset? Thanks for the post, Frank

As I understand this after reading all articles posted you need two dongles? One for the driver one for the passenger? Plus two adapter cables plus two helmet mounted head sets? If this is so this adds up to over 1,200.00 and you do not have bike to bike, the articles written says nothing about the maximum range for this device. Also the disclaimers about all sales are final sends shivers down my spine! My hope is that someone will offer a unit that will work well all the time not most of the time with the Gold Wing and be affordable offered as a complete kit. Guess I will wait and see.

It is great news to see the availability of the bluetooth arrangement in my helmet etc, however installation is beyond my ability presently. Where Can I get it installed in a new helmet?

Thought flyboy had some good thoughts.
